Do You Need a Visa for St. Maarten? Here's the Honest Answer
Over 80% of arrivals at Princess Juliana International Airport get in without an extra permit. Yet plenty of travelers still get turned away — not because of visa issues, but because they showed up missing basic documents. Here’s what you actually need to know before you fly.
U.S. Passport Holders: The Short Answer
No visa required for tourism. U.S. citizens can enter St. Maarten visa-free and stay up to six months uninterrupted.
But visa-free doesn’t mean document-free. Officers at the border still check everything — and they have final say on who gets in.
What You Need at the Border
Whether you’re arriving by plane or cruise ship, have these ready:
- Valid passport — must cover your entire stay
- Return or onward ticket — confirmed and in your name
- Completed ED-card — fill it out at entry.sx before you travel
- Proof of accommodation — hotel booking, rental confirmation, or host address
- Proof of funds — credit card or bank statement. About US$100–$200 per day is the guideline
Where to Live
How Long Can You Stay?
| Nationality | Typical Stay |
|---|---|
| U.S. / Dutch nationals | Up to 6 months |
| Canada / EU / Australia / NZ / Japan | Up to 3 months |
| Most other tourists | 30 days |
Extensions are possible but not automatic. Apply before your permitted time runs out at the Immigration and Border Protection Office in Philipsburg, or download forms at sintmaartengov.org. Valid medical insurance is required for the extended period.
Already Hold a Visa or Permit from Another Country?
You may qualify for an exemption even if your passport is normally on the visa-required list. These documents can waive the usual entry requirement:
- Valid Schengen residence card or multi-entry visa
- UK or Ireland residence permit or multi-entry visa
- U.S. or Canadian residence permit (and for some nationalities, a multi-entry visa)
- French Saint-Martin residence permit or visa
Always carry originals plus copies, and confirm your exemption status with the relevant embassy before you travel.
Cruise Passengers
Port stops under 48 hours are generally exempt from formal entry requirements. Still — have your cruise papers and passport accessible. Officers can still ask questions.
Bottom Line
If you hold a U.S. passport and you’re visiting for tourism, you’re in good shape. No visa, generous stay limits, and a straightforward entry process. Just don’t show up without your documents sorted.
