What to Do in St. Maarten When You're Not on the Beach
The Beach Is Just the Starting Point
Everyone comes for the beach. And I get it — Maho, Mullet Bay, Happy Bay — they’re stunning. But if that’s all you see, you’re only getting about 20% of what this island has to offer. The things to do in St. Maarten that I love most don’t require sunscreen.
The French side has open-air markets in Marigot where you can buy fresh bread, local spices, and handmade crafts on a Wednesday morning. The produce is incredible, and the people-watching is even better. I go almost every week, even after years of living here.
Eat Like a Local, Not a Tourist
One of the best things to do on St. Maarten island is eat — but skip the resort restaurants. Head to a lolo in Grand Case for ribs and Johnny cakes. Try the Indonesian food in Philipsburg — this island’s Dutch-Indonesian history shows up on the plate in the most unexpected way.
There’s a reason St. Maarten calls itself the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.” It’s not marketing. With over 300 restaurants on 37 square miles, you could eat somewhere new every night for almost a year.
Hike, Explore, and Slow Down
The Guana Bay trail gives you views that no hotel balcony can match. Fort Amsterdam has centuries of history and a quiet spot to sit and think. Loterie Farm on the French side offers treetop adventures and a pool tucked into the hillside.
What to do in St. Maarten really depends on what kind of experience you want. If you want noise and energy, the boardwalk in Philipsburg delivers. If you want peace, the back roads of Terres Basses will surprise you. That’s the thing about this island — it has range. You just have to be willing to look past the postcards.

Let’s Connect and Find Your Dream Property
Wei Landgraf, a realtor at Island Dreams Realty
Hello! I’m Wei, originally from China. I lived in the U.S. and Japan before discovering St. Maarten through a business partner’s real estate opportunities. What started as vacation rentals grew into my full passion, now I help others buy, sell, and rent properties across the island.
I’m organized, direct, and give my clients everything. Outside of work, you’ll find me hiking Guana Bay’s trails, at the gym, or planning trips to Saba – my personal paradise.
If you want someone who’s straight with you and genuinely cares about finding the right property, let’s talk. Happy Connecting 😊
