St. Maarten Entry Requirements for U.S. Travelers: What to Bring and What to Know
Here’s a surprising fact — over 70% of visitors are asked to show documents at arrival, even when they think they’re fully cleared. Don’t be that person scrambling at the immigration desk. Here’s everything you need before you board.
What to Have Ready at the Border
No matter how you arrive — flight or cruise ship — officers on the Dutch side will check for five things:
- Valid passport — must cover your entire stay
- Completed ED-card — fill it accurately, inconsistent answers cause delays
- Return or onward ticket — dated and in your name
- Proof of accommodation — hotel booking, rental confirmation, or a host’s address
- Proof of funds — credit card, bank statement, or cash. Budget around US$100–$200 per day as a guideline
Do U.S. Citizens Need a Visa?
No. Most American tourists are visa-exempt. That said, being exempt from a visa doesn’t mean skipping the document check — you still need everything listed above.
Once you’re on the island, the French side is open. No checkpoints, no extra paperwork.
How Long Can You Stay?
U.S. and Dutch nationals can typically stay up to 6 months uninterrupted. “Uninterrupted” means one continuous visit — leaving briefly doesn’t automatically reset the clock.
Need more time? Extensions are possible but not guaranteed. Apply early at the Immigration and Border Protection Office in Philipsburg or download the form at sintmaartengov.org. You’ll need updated accommodation proof, a new onward ticket, and bank statements.
Special Situations Worth Knowing
Traveling with pets — contact the Inspection Department at least 10 days before travel. You’ll need an import permit and a health certificate from a vet.
Bringing items back to the U.S. — liquids over 3oz and powders over 12oz go in checked luggage. No conch shells — they’re prohibited. Declare cash over US$10,000 at customs.
Transit passengers — carry full documents even for short connections. Officers can screen you regardless of how brief your stop is.
Bottom Line
U.S. travelers have it relatively easy entering Sint Maarten — no visa required, generous stay limits, and a straightforward process. Just don’t show up underprepared. Pack your documents, fill the ED-card honestly, and have your return ticket ready.
